ENVIRONMENTAL SUSTAINABILITY AND CLIMATE CHANGE: COLLABORATION ON THE TOPIC OF "CARBON FOOTPRINT" BETWEEN JUVENTUS AND THE INSTITUTE OF MANAGEMENT OF THE SANT'ANNA SCHOOL THAT SUPPORT THE JUVENTUS FOOTBALL CLUB IN QUANTIFYING ITS CARBON EMISSIONS
Sant’Anna School and Juventus joined forces to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Within the SuM - Sustainability Management - Laboratory of the Institute of Management of Sant’Anna School there is a research group committed to linking the world of sport, football in particular, and environmental sustainability. This group will support the Juventus club in quantifying its carbon emissions of Scope 3 with scientific and consolidated methods, based on twenty years of experience in the study of the so-called “environmental footprint”.
The first phase of the project will consist of an analysis of all possible sources of emissions related to Juventus activities (training, matches, stadium management...), while the second phase will establish a specific methodology for the classification and calculation of indirect emissions (procurement, public reception…), in line with the ISO 14064 standard and with the GHG protocol of the World Resource Institute, that define international guidelines for the calculation of greenhouse gases.
The innovative path of applying the “carbon footprint” to sporting events begun with the activities carried out by Sant'Anna School, in particular by the Institute of Management, as part of the European project “Life TACKLE”. The project focuses on the environmental management of professional football and on the development of different actions aimed at the sustainability of this sector - such as waste management, supporters’ mobility, energy consumption originating from matches and stadium management. In 2019, Juventus was one of the “pioneering” clubs that contributed to the “Life TACKLE” project from its very first steps, by providing its experience on the development of good environmental practices, applied to the management of matches, training and facilities (including the Allianz Stadium).
This agreement launches a new path of collaboration with Juventus, one of the most innovative and avant-garde clubs in the panorama of professional football for its commitment against climate change. It aims to consolidate the path already undertaken and make a further qualitative step forward in terms of sustainability and the fight against Climate Change.
"All sectors of society must be involved in the fight against climate change. Sport, and football in particular, has a great influence on society and on different generations, and it represents an important lever for developing effective actions to reduce the greenhouse effect", affirmed Fabio Iraldo, co-director of the SuM Laboratory.
"The strategies of an important and prestigious club such as Juventus are decisive in this perspective, not only by reducing their emissions, but also by acting on all levels of the supply chain, and by involving fans in choices and behaviors that are sustainable and environmentally-friendly", stated Tiberio Daddi, lead researcher of the research group "Sport and Sustainability", within the Sustainability Management Laboratory at the Institute of Management of Sant'Anna School.
